In occasione dei concerti che gli Ayreon hanno tenuto a Tilburg in Olanda nel weekend del 15-16-17 settembre di quest’anno, abbiamo avuto l’onore di intervistare Brittney Slayes, vocalist della band power metal canadese Unleash The Archers. Brittney ha fatto parte di questa esibizione come guest, cimentandosi principalmente nelle parti vocali che furono originariamente assegnate a Floor Jansen nel disco 01011001 del 2008 che gli Ayreon hanno suonato per intero in questi concerti. Ciao Brittney! Mi fa molto piacere essere qui a scambiare due chiacchiere con te… prima di tutto volevo chiederti come sono andati questi primi show (mi riferisco a quelli degli Ayreon in cui lei è stata ospite). È la prima volta che ti capita di suonare ben due volte nello stesso giorno?
– Brittney: Fino ad ora è andato tutto alla grande! È stato fantastico e la crew e le altre persone dello staff sono tutte super organizzate e ti portano ovunque devi essere ad ogni momento. Quindi sì, tutto alla grande! Voglio dire, c’è molto da ricordare e mi è capitato spesso di uscire dal palco dal lato sbagliato ma per il resto mi sto divertendo molto e sono super onorate di essere qui! E sì, è la prima volta come vocalist di un gruppo metal che faccio due concerti nello stesso giorno. Quando ero più giovane facevo dei musical nei teatri e li mi è capitato… ma non come vocalist heavy metal!

Torneremo a parlare degli Ayreon più in là ma prima volevo chiederti… tornando indietro di qualche anno a quando avete rilasciato il vostro ultimo album Abyss che tra l’altro reputo il vostro disco migliore, un album veramente straordinario…
– Ti ringrazio!

Come è stato rilasciare quel disco in mezzo alla pandemia, e col senno di poi rifareste una cosa del genere?
– Penso che abbiamo preso la decisione giusta. La Napalm Records continuava a posticipare l’uscita dicendo che ogni band stava facendo la stessa cosa e io mi impuntai e dissi – “sapete, dalla mia esperienza personale oggi come oggi sto tutti i giorni su Spotify a cercare nuova musica, ho praticamente ascoltato tutto ciò che c’è da ascoltare, sto a casa senza aver nulla da fare sperando che l’algoritmo di Spotify o di Youtube mi faccia scoprire qualcosa di nuovo… penso che questo quindi sia esattamente il momento giusto per far uscire nuova musica, perché come me tanta altra gente sarà a casa senza nulla da fare ed affamata di nuova musica da ascoltare”. Sono stata abbastanza convincente dato che l’etichetta mi disse – “ok non c’è non abbiamo nessun’altra band su cui concentrarci al momento quindi metteremo tutto ciò che abbiamo in questa release” e così hanno fatto. È stato inoltre molto bello ricevere così tanti messaggi dai fan ringraziandoci per avergli dato qualcosa, una luce in un momento buio,  una nuova release da attendere con ansia dato che tutte le loro band preferite stavano posticipando l’uscita dell’album. Insomma penso che sì, abbiamo fatto la cosa giusta e lo rifarei ampiamente.

Tra l’altro ho visto che vi hanno annunciati a Wacken… finalmente! Perché io vado li tutti gli anni…
– Dai? Sei andato anche quest’anno?

Sono andato, e sono riuscito ad entrare! Ci è andata bene…
– Meno male.

Comunque mi ricordo che vi avevano annunciato per l’edizione del 2020 che è stata cancellata, poi avete annunciato uno show a Milano che purtroppo è stato cancellato per lo stesso motivo quindi incrociando le dita questa volta dovrebbe essere finalmente la mia occasione per vedervi dal vivo! Parlando di cose nuove… immagino che state scrivendo un nuovo disco?
– È fatto! Tutto concluso! pronto, infiocchettato e pronto per vedere luce…

Wooowww fantastico! Quindi naturalmente non potrai dirmi nulla a riguardo (rido)! A parte forse il fatto che sarà un concept album con una storia diversa dal duo Apex/Abyss?
– Esattamente!

E musicalmente c’è qualcosa di diverso?
– Assolutamente! Beh è divertente perché abbiamo preso qualche aspetto di ogni album della nostra discografia. C’è un po’ di Apex, un po’ di Abyss un pelino di Time Stands Still e anche qualcosina di Behold (Behold The Devastation il primo album degli UTA)… stiamo facendo ritornare un po’ di quelle radici death metal che tanto ci piacciono ma stiamo anche sperimentando su cose nuove come sezioni più progressive e per la prima volta nella nostra storia abbiamo una ballad in questo disco ! una vera e propria ballad! Quindi insomma ci siamo divertiti a sperimentare e vedere cosa sarebbe uscito fuori e lo abbiamo messo tutto nel disco.

Quindi immagino che il disco uscirà nel 2024?
– Esatto!

Fantastico! Tra l’altro parlando delle influenze melodic death metal… credo che siano un qualcosa che renda il vostro stile di power metal molto unico … c’è un particolare musicista nella band che ha portato questo lato della vostra musica? O è un qualcosa che viene da ognuno di voi?
– Siamo tutti fan del death metal, forse lo ascoltavamo di più un tempo ma personalmente è un genere che ascolto ancora con piacere. Guardando indietro agli anni dei nostri esordi la scena deathcore era estremamente “cool” ai tempi e naturalmente ascoltavamo tutte le band grosse di quel filone… All That Remains… ecc…

Ti piacciono loro? (gli mostro il mio cappellino col logo dei Lorna Shore, band deathcore che sta spopolando al momento)
– Li conosco ma no non li ho ancora ascoltati a dire il vero! In ogni caso… penso che anche tu conosci tutte le band di quel periodo a cui mi sto riferendo e siamo tutti quanti stati molto influenzati da quel filone musicale e direi che il motivo per cui all’inizio avevamo così tante parti death metal nella nostra musica era perché Brandon, il nostro primo chitarrista, era anche il nostro compositore principale della band e io e lui condividevamo equamente le parti in sceaming e quelle in pulito. Ed era molto importante allora che le nostre parti vocali avessero un peso uguale perché avevamo fondato la band insieme… poi quando lui ha lasciato Andrew è subentrato nel ruolo di compositore…non come compositore principale ma bisogna dargli atto che scrive una buona parte della musica e da li gli UTA hanno virato verso un suono più vicino al power metal perché Andrew è più un fan del metal classico anche se pure lui apprezza tantissimo il melodic death metal. È un grande fan di Devin Towndsen dei Soilwork, Dark Tranquillity, Amorphis… tutto ciò che riesci ad associare al death metal melodico lui lo ascolta! Quindi insomma lui è un fan e lo sono anch’io quindi in ogni album degli UTA ci sarà almeno un pezzo in cui diciamo “ecco questo è il nostro brano death metal!”.

Figo! Insomma possiamo aspettarci tante belle cose diverse dal nuovo album…
– Come sempre! Ci sta un pochino di tutto.

Parlando degli Ayreon, conoscevi la musica di Arjen e Arjen stesso prima che lui ti contattasse per collaborare per il progetto Star One (Uno dei tanti progetti paralleli di Lucassen). Insomma eri una fan o lo conoscevi?
– In realtà no… voglio dire conoscevo la sua musica, ma non lui personalmente. Andrew il nostro chitarrista è un grande fan del disco 01 e ricordo che quando uscì lo ascoltavamo sempre nel nostro tour bus mentre ci spostavamo da concerto a concerto, però è stato un mio amico Jason Ashcraft degli Helion Prime che mi disse “hey dovresti contattare Arjen per chiederli gli poter collaborare con lui” e io ai tempi gli risposi “ oh no no… un giorno forse… non voglio esercitare troppa pressione su un qualcosa del genere …” . Ma poi è stato lo stesso Arjen a scoprirmi attraverso Youtube..

Con una cover di Queen Of The Reich dei Queensryche vero?
– Karaoke ! (ride) quindi si lo conoscevo e quando mi ha scritto ho pensato che sì, sarebbe stato una bella opportunità, quindi assolutamente ero contentissima di farlo!

Tra l’altro in quel disco degli Star One in cui hai collaborato – Revel In Time, uscito nel 2022 dove Brittney appare nel primo brano dell’album Fate Of Man – so che ogni canzone è associata ad un film di fantascienza diverso… sei stata fortunata e Arjen ti ha concesso di cantare proprio nel brano del tuo film preferito?
– Quello che è successo è che scrisse il pezzo e poi mi contattò dicendo – “ho scritto questo pezzo appositamente per la tua voce!” – Io gli chiesi … “E di cosa tratta il tema?”, e lui rispose… “ del film Terminator!” e quindi gli risposi “ Wow fantastico! Ma lo sai Arjen che io sono una super fan della fantascienza !”(ride) e lui mi disse … “non lo sapevo in realtà”… quindi è stata una combinazione perfetta!

C’è qualcosa che riporterai da questa esperienza degli show con il progetto Ayreon e che ti aiuterà con gli Unleash The Archers? Qualche consiglio che ti ha dato Arjen?
– More is more (ride) – “more is more” è la tipica espressione che usa Arjen quando parla della scenografia dei suoi concerti che si contrappone al più pratico “less is more”. 
In realtà è più per quanto riguarda la parte scenografica e la produzione degli show. Questi show sono stati impressionanti da questo punto di vista e per quanto bellissimi sarebbe davvero difficile portare una cosa del genere on the road. Io sono stata sempre più dalla parte del “less is more” nella nostra band, quindi non avere troppo equipaggiamento e troppa roba dietro in modo da poterci spostare più facilmente e fare più date possibili. Insomma vorrei che il punto focale dello spettacolo fossimo noi e non le luci, gli schermi, i fuochi ecc… anche se devo ammettere che sono un sacco fighi! Chissà magari un giorno ci porteremo dietro in tour degli schermi LED giganti!

Sarebbe fighissimo! Domanda completamente separata da tutto questo e una questione su cui c’è molto dibattito e molta divisione a riguardo. Ieri ho visto un’intervista con Corey Tarlor e lui ce l’aveva a morte con Spotify il poco guadagno che da agli artisti e tutto quel sistema. Tu che ne pensi? Credi che Spotify e Internet in generale abbiano dato o tolto di più alla tua band? O forse sei una di quelle persone la cui opinione sta nel mezzo e che sostiene che dobbiamo adattarci ai tempi in cui viviamo…
– Si voglio dire è come funziona ora il mondo cosa possiamo farci? È una maledizione e una benedizione allo stesso tempo, ha fatto delle cose straordinarie… senza internet e Spotify la gente probabilmente non ci ascolterebbe da paesi come il Brasile o Il Giappone o altri ancora.. ma forse se non ci fosse mai stato la vendita del merch fisico sarebbe ancora enorme e tantissime band suonerebbero nelle arene e se una specifica label avesse deciso di puntare fortemente su di te avresti avuto un sostegno economico enorme e la tua band sarebbe forse diventata enorme… però non è come funziona oggi e non c’è alcun senso nel lamentarsi, bisogna abbracciare le nuove tecnologie, adattarsi e andare avanti. Voglio dire… io uso Spotify tutti i giorni  e sono su Youtube e quando amo veramente una band poi sono sempre libera di sostenerli maggiormente comprando il loro merch ufficiale o andandoli a vedere dal vivo…

E tra l’altro rimanendo su questo tema  credo che voi siete una delle band più coperte da Youtube sotto la forma dei “reaction videos”. Ne ho visti una marea su di voi persino su canali enormi come The Charismatic Voice o quello di Alex Hefner. Questi sono Youtuber enormi che vi hanno coperti quindi per voi deve essere stata una grossa pubblicità!
– Adoriamo i “reaction channels”!

Quindi insomma in un certo senso internet vi ha veramente aiutato!
– Onestamente è la community, la nostra fanbase … quando esce un nuovo “reaction video” di una qualsiasi band ci sono sempre i commenti di qualche fan che scrive “fate Tonight We Ride o Awakening degli UTA!” e questa cosa la adoriamo! Abbiamo una fanbase fantastica! È ancora non grandissima in termini numerici ma li adoriamo e li consideriamo come quello che sono realmente ossia degli amici… e stanno li che ci supportano e molti sono venuti da noi durante i concerti dicendoci, “lo sai vi abbiamo scoperto grazie a questo o quest’altro canale youtube!” e quindi adoriamo questa cosa e loro ci supportano al massimo e noi li supportiamo al massimo. Durante il ciclo promozionale di Abyss abbiamo fatto diverse collaborazioni con diversi Youtuber come Mr. Rock n’ Roll e Alex Hefner

Vero! L’ho vista quest’ultima!
– Già… e continueremo a farle anche per il ciclo promozionale del nuovo disco!

Ultime due cose… la prima è una curiosità… In questi concerti degli Ayreon ti occuperai delle parti vocali che erano originariamente di Floor Jansen nel cast del disco di 01 vero?
– Esattamente!

E poi eseguirete Fate Of Man (pezzo degli Star One di cui parlavamo prima)! L’ho appena visto da setlist.fm!
– Ci sono cose che non si possono tenere segrete per sempre (ride)

Ultima cosa… con gli UTA hai un sogno nel cassetto da realizzare o vivi la vostra musica giorno per giorno pensando che comunque è difficile fare troppe previsioni dato che il mondo attorno a noi è così incerto…
– Quest’ultima! (ride) viviamo questa cosa giorno per giorno prendendoci le opportunità che ci sono appena si presentano e cercando di essere grati e goderci ogni singolo giorno. Se metti troppa pressione su di te e hai troppe aspettative è molto facile rimanere delusi… stiamo quindi viaggiano con la corrente e siamo contenti di essere qui e contenti di continuare a cresce a piccoli passi come abbiamo sempre fatto. Poi vedremo cosa il futuro avrà in serbo per noi!

Hi Brittney! I’m really happy to be talking to you… first of all I wanted to ask you about these first shows you did with Ayreon… how did they go and is it the first time that you are actually playing two shows in one day?
– Brittney: Yes so far great! Yeah it’s been awesome. An amazing crew and everything is super organized so you are basically just ushered wherever you need to be at the right places at the right times so… it’s been super awesome! I mean there is a lot to remember and I definitely have exited off stage on the wrong way a few times, but other than that It’s been a really great time so I’m super honored to be here. And yes, it’s been the first time that I’ve played a show twice in one day! I was in musical theater when I was younger so I did it a lot back then, but as a heavy metal vocalist if was definitely the first time… pretty great though!

I can imagine that! of course we will get back to Ayreon but for now I wanted to ask you… going back a few years ago when you released Abyss, which by the way I think is your strongest record to date such a fantastic album…
– Thank You!

Do you think that given it was a very particular moment during the pandemic, in hindsight, would you have done it again? Would you have released that album during that period or would you have perhaps waited for the storm to settle?
– No I think we did the right thing because Napalm records kept pushing it and pushing it and saying “you know everyone is pushing the release date of their records you should do the same” and I said well, from personal experience, and this was two months into the pandemic when we were about to push the release date for the third time, I said personally I’m on Spotify  everyday looking for new music. Give me something new to listen to! I’ve listened to all of the things I like and we’re all at home with nothing to do, and I’m on youtube constantly and I’m letting the Spotify algorithm show me new music… so I was like, I think this is the perfect time to put the record out. So they said “Ok well let’s do it! We have no one else to concentrate on right now so we’ll put everything we got into this and let’s go for it!” So they did and we had so many messages from people saying thank you! Thank you for giving us something to look forward to, thank you for giving us a light in the darkness because all of our favorite bands who we knew were planning to release their albums in 2020 have pushed their albums, so now there is so little to look forward to … so I think we did the right thing and I would do it again.

Yeah… and by the way I just saw that you were announced in Wacken… finally! Because I’ve been going there ever year…
– Awesome! Did you get to go this year?

I went this year and I managed to get in… fortunately!
– Good Good.

Cause I remember you were announced and then cancelled in 2020, then you announced a show in Milan (Italy) and that got cancelled too because of the pandemic so this time hopefully I’m gonna be able to see you live! Fingers crossed! So speaking about new things… I’m guessing that you are writing a new record or in the process of writing it?
– It’s all done, finished , tied in a little bow and ready to go!

Wowwww! So of course you can’t tell me anything about it !(laughing), apart from the fact that I know that it’s probably going to be a concept album with a separate story from Apex/Abyss?
– It is… yeah.

But musically…. Is there something different?
– Yeah! Well it’s kind of funny because we drew from a little bit of everything from the old catalogue for this album… there is a little bit of Apex a little bit of Abyss  a little bit of Time Stands Still a little Behold even… just you know bringing back those death metal roots… but we’re also experimenting on some new things … we’re experimenting with maybe a little more proggy stuff, we have a ballad on the record for the first time ever! Like a real legit ballad!so we are kind of having fun with whatever’s going on musically in the band and we are putting it on there.

So you are planning a release in 2024?
– Yes!

Ok, wow that’s fantastic news!  by the way… regarding the melodeath influences that I feel is something kind of unique in your music, is there a particular guy in the band who brought that part of Unleash The Archers, or is it something that comes from all of you?
– Yeah we’re all…(pauses)… maybe not so much anymore … well actually I still do listen to death metal a lot, but back in the day, I mean, deathcore and all of that was what was really “cool”, and of course we were all listening to the big bands- All That Remains… millions of them!

Do you like (showing her my Lorna Shore cap) Lorna Shore?
– I know them but no I haven’t listened to them… but anyway I guess you know all the big bands from back in the day and we all have been influenced from them a lot, and I would say that the reason why we had so much death metal in the beginning was because Bradon our original guitar player was also our original songwriter, and he and I shared the lead vocals. You know the screaming vocals were just as important as the power metal vocals, so he screamed as much in every song as I sang… and it was a very important part that we shared together because we started the band together… and so when he left that is when the sound shifted more  to the traditional power metal route because Andrew stepped up. Not as the primary songwriter but he does write a lot of it, and he is definitely more of a traditional heavy metal guy, but he also has plenty of death metal influences as well and he is a huge Devin Towndsen fan  and Soilwork and Dark Tranquillity, Amorphis everything that you can think of regarding melodic death metal. So he is a fan and I’m a fan as well, so we like to keep that and there is always gonna be at least one track that is like… oh yeah this is our death metal song!

Cool! So we can expect quite a few things…
– Yeah, like usual… there is a little bit of everything.

Speaking about Ayreon di you know Arjen’s music and Arjen before he actually contacted you for Star One (one of Arjen’s many side projects)? Were you a fan or did you know him?
– Not really actually… I mean I knew him of course and Andrew’s a big fan of the 01 record, so back in the day it would be on in the van when we were touring and stuff, so I was familiar with the record, but it was actually a friend of mine Jason Ashcraft from Helion Prime who was like… you need to talk about getting on some of their stuff or something… but I was like “oh no no… I’ll just… one day maybe or whatever… I’m not gonna push anything like that”, but then he found me through Youtube.

– Karaoke! (laughs) so yeah I was already aware of him and when he messaged me I was like, ok this is a really cool opportunity, so I was definitely on board the second he texted me.

By the way in that Star One album (Revel in Time, released in 2022 where Brittney appeared on the first track of the record, Fate Of Man) I know each song is associated to a different sci-fi  movie… So did he give you your favorite movie to sing on?
– What happened was he wrote it and then he said “I wrote this one for you”… and so I was like… “ok what’s it about?” and he was like… “The Terminator!”  so I was like “awesome, perfect, did you know that I’m a total sci-fi nerd? (laughs)? And he was like… “ no I had no idea”… so it was perfect!

Are there a few tips  or anything that you will bring back to Unleash The Archers after this experience you had with Ayreon with these shows?
– More is more? (laughs)

Any tip that he gave you or anything that comes to mind?
– Well it’s really more about the production side of things, it’s such a big show and… I mean it would be really difficult to take something like that on the road but (pauses)… I’ve always been the advocate for “less is more” in our band which is keep the touring rig small so that we can do one – off gigs and move around as much as possible. Also let WE put on the show, not the lights and the fire and all that stuff even though it sure is cool! So maybe we’ll get come LED screens or something for our next tour (laughs), who knows!

Totally separate question that I wanted to ask you and everyone seems to have a different opinion about this subject. Yesterday I heard an interview on Youtube where Corey Taylor was totally bashing it …. What do you think about the internet and Spotify? (Corey to be fair was bashing the way artists get paid from Spotify not the internet in general), do you think it gave more or it took away more from Unleash The Archers? Or maybe you are someone in the middle who thinks… we are just living the times we have to do what it takes..
– Yeah I mean this is the world now, like, what are you gonna do about it? So yeah that’s exactly what it is… it’s a curse and a blessing, it’s done amazing things… without it we wouldn’t be played in Brazil, Japan or whatever.. but maybe if it had never happened print media would still be huge, bands would still play arena tours, and if you were lucky enough to be the band that a specific label picked up and invested money in you, well then you would probably be huge… but I mean that’s not the way it is and there is no point in lamenting about it, you have to embrace it and adapt and move on. I mean I use Spotify and I’m on Youtube and that’s what I do when I love a band I buy their physical merch, I go watch them live…

And by the way I think that you are one of the most “reacted to” bands on Youtube because I have seen loads and loads of channels doing UTA reactions, even huge channels like The Charismatic Voice or Alex Hefner, huge Youtubers covering you, so I mean It’s great publicity for your band!
– We love the reaction channels!

So I mean in that way the internet is really, really helpful.
– Well honestly that’s the community … every time a new reaction video from any band pops up there is someone in the comment section writing “please react to Tonight We Ride or Awakening from UTA” and we love that! We have such an amazing fanbase… and it’s small but we love them and we treat them like what they are which is friends, and they are out there supporting us and a lot of them have come up to us at shows saying “oh you know I discovered you guys from this channel or this channel”… and so we love it and they support us and we support them. On the Abyss record we did three co-reactions with Mr. Rock n’ Roll and Alex (Hefner)

Yeah I saw that one!
– Yeah and so we’re gonna do the same thing of course for the new record and continue to try to embrace that community with the new tracks and singles we will eventually put out.

Last two things… the first one is a curiosity. Tonight you are gonna play Floor’s parts right ? (Floor Jansen was part of the original 01 cast but she couldn’t make it so Brittney is substituting her).
– Yes!

And you are also gonna play Fate Of Man, I just saw that!
– (laughs) well I can’t keep a secret forever!

Last thing I wanted to ask you is , with UTA do you have a big goal in your mind or are you going step by step? You know just living the day and thinking you can’t make too many predictions cause you never know what is going to happen …
– That one ! (laughs)

So you are living…
– Literally day by day and taking the opportunities as they come and enjoying every day. If you put too much pressure on yourself , if you have too many expectations then all you experience is disappointment.

Yeah cause you never know what will happen in the world maybe another pandemic?
– Exactly! I mean you can hope that your shows happen ! so yeah, we’re just kind of going with the flow and just happy to be here really and happy to continue to grow slowly like we always have and see what the future holds.
